Anfield - the name alone conjures up a million and one memories, be it good bad, tragic or triumphant.

It is one of the oldest and most famous football grounds in the world. Originally the home of Everton Football Club between 1884 and 1892, Anfield has long since become synonymous with Liverpool Football Club and the amazing success achieved by the Reds.

Down the years some of the games greatest names have graced the hallowed Anfield turf and contributed to some of the most memorable matches ever played. Off the pitch the legendary Anfield atmosphere is renowned throughout the world.

Following the announcement yesterday that Liverpool Football Club is planning to leave the present Anfield ground and move to a new 55,000 seater stadium 300-yards away in Stanley Park, Liverpoolfc.tv looks back at some of the significant moments in Anfield history'

1884 - Everton move into Anfield, then just a patch of land owned by local brewer John Orrell

1889 - Anfield stages its first international between England and Ireland

1891 - Anfield celebrates the first of many league titles as Everton are crowned champions

1892 - Everton leave Anfield following a dispute over rent and Liverpool FC is formed

1895 - Anfield's first Main Stand is built, seating 3,000 spectators

1903 - The first Anfield Road terrace built

1906 - A bank of terracing is built at the Walton Breck Road end of the ground and christened the Spion Kop. A barrel roofed stand is also constructed on Kemlyn Road side of ground

1921 - The King and Queen attend the FA Cup semi-final replay between Wolves and Cardiff

1923 - A rare goal by winger Fred Hopkin is greeted by the outbreak of a fire in the Main Stand

1928 - A roof is put on Kop

1934 - Nel Tarleton fights Fr eddie Miller for the World Featherweight title

1952 - Anfield?s all-time record attendance of 61,905 is set when Wolves visit for a FA Cup fourth round tie

1957 - Floodlights are installed. They are switched on in October for a game against Everton

1963 - A cantilever stand is built on the Kemlyn Road, seatin 6,700 spectators

1964 - Match of the Day?s first ever programme is broadcast from Anfield

1965 - The Anfield Road end get a new roof

1967 - A FA Cup tie v Everton at Goodison is relayed on giant screens at Anfield

1973 - The old Main Stand is pulled down and the present stand built

1977 - Perimeter fences are erected around Anfield and in November that year Scotland and Wales contest a vital World Cup qualifier

1981 - The paddock is seated

1982 - The Shankly Gates are erected in memory of the legendary manager Bill Shankly who passed away the previous year.

1983 - The Anfield Road is seated

1984 - Anfield hosts American evangelist Billy Graham

1987 - A collapsed sewer under the Kop delays start of season

1989 - Anfield becomes a shrine to victims of the Hillsborough disaster and fences are removed from the front of the Kop

1992 - To commemorate the club's centenary year an upper tier is added to the Kemlyn Road stand, which is renamed the Centenary Stand

1994 - To comply with the Taylor Report the Spion Kop terrace is demolished and a new grandstand is constructed transforming Anfield into an all-seater stadium

1995 - Eire and Holland meet at Anfield in Euro 96 qualifying play/off

1996 - Anfield plays host to four games in Euro 96

1998 - An upper tier is added to the Anfield Road stand

1999 - The Paisley Gateway is erected outside the Kop in honour of the club's most successful ever manager

2000 - Plans to mo ve away from Anfield are first announced

2002 - Liverpool Football Club reveal that they plan to leave Anfield and build a new 55,000 seater stadium 300-yards away in Stanley Park.
